Janet (Jessie) McKay McLea was born in Rothesay, on the Isle of Bute, a fifth child of Peter (Patrick) McKay, Jr., Master Blacksmith, and Elisabeth Glass. She moved to the city, Glasgow, on the Scottish mainland, and there married John McLea, a Blacksmith and Bell Hanger from Rothesay.
